BMW G8X M3 & M4 Dry Carbon Fiber Upgrades: 2021+ Guide
Share
The G8X generation — M3 (G80 sedan, G81 Touring) and M4 (G82 Coupe, G83 Convertible) — is the first M car where BMW leaned hard into the tall, vertical kidney grille. Love it or not, that big front-end canvas is exactly why G8X owners upgrade the exterior faster than almost any other M car. And among all the materials on the market, dry carbon fiber is the one that changes the car the most.
This guide covers the pieces we get asked about most for 2021+ G8X, grouped by zone so you can build in stages instead of all at once. If you only change one thing, start with the grille — it is the single highest-impact swap on the front end.

1. The Grille — Where Most G8X Builds Start
Nothing changes the face of a G80/G81 M3 or G82/G83 M4 as much as swapping the grille. This one is an autoclave-cured dry carbon replacement in 3K twill weave with a high-gloss 2K clear coat, and it is available in five different face styles, so you can pick the exact look instead of settling for one. It is the single most requested G8X part we sell, and in our experience the best first upgrade because it instantly reads as a build rather than a stock car.
2. Front End — Lips, Vents & Canards
3. Side Profile — Skirts, Fender Vents & Mirrors
4. Rear End — Wings & Diffusers
5. Engine Bay & Cabin
6. The Big Pieces — Trunk Lid & Hood
Dry Carbon vs. Wet Carbon — Why It Matters on G8X
| Dry carbon (prepreg / autoclave) | Wet carbon (hand layup) | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Lighter — minimal resin content | Heavier — resin adds mass |
| Strength | Higher stiffness-to-weight | Good, but more resin-rich |
| Finish | Deep, even 3K twill under gloss clear | Can show resin pooling and weave distortion |
| Best for | Aero parts, hoods, anything load-bearing | Small cosmetic trims on a budget |
All of the exterior aero parts in this guide are dry carbon with a 2K clear coat and UV inhibitor — the finish that holds its gloss instead of yellowing after a couple of summers.
How to Build a G8X in Stages
- Stage 1 — Face: grille first. It is the cheapest way to make the car look modified.
- Stage 2 — Stance: front lip + side skirts. This alone makes the car look lowered even on stock suspension.
- Stage 3 — Rear: diffuser and wing, chosen to match the aggression of your front end.
- Stage 4 — Details: mirror caps, fender vents, canards. These are what separate a parts car from a finished build.
- Stage 5 — Big pieces: hood, trunk lid, engine bay. Only worth it once everything else is done.
Fitment Notes for G8X
- for BMW M3 G80 — sedan, 2021–2026
- for BMW M3 G81 — Touring / estate, 2021–2026
- for BMW M4 G82 — coupe, 2021–2026
- for BMW M4 G83 — convertible, 2021–2026
Not for the previous-generation F80 M3 / F82 M4 (2014–2020) — the front and rear profiles are completely different, so F8X and G8X parts are not interchangeable. Also not for the M2 G87 (2023+), which uses its own body panels and grille shape.
